Film director Andrzej Wajda is one of Poland’s foremost artists. He recently completed "Katyn", a film that depicts the massacre of Polish army officers (including his own father) in 1940. With the completion of this major work, Wajda has for the first time clearly exposed a 50-year battle that he waged with censors. Wajda’s work includes "Ashes and Diamonds", which depicts people resisting Poland’s social regime; "Man of Marble" and "Man of Iron", which show workers standing up against Stalinism; and now Katyn. The program "Andrzej Wajda: Chronicler of Poland" uses previously unreleased censorship records and Wajda’s own storyboards to document the battle that Wajda continually waged with censor in order to depict the modern history of his native Poland.

Under Russia’s first dual leadership, former President Vladimir Putin has kept a firm grip over his political power. Instrumental in forging of that power is his thorough control over media. With Russia’s three major TV stations now under state control, his regime - as projected on TV - has garnered tremendous support and fervor from the people. On the other hand, journalists in the independent media struggle with intense pressure from authorities, and are faced with a painful dilemma in their fight for freedom of speech: journalistic integrity, or survival. From the front lines of the coverage of the Presidential transition, this program examines the relationship between the media and the political regime in Russia

Losing his eyesight at the age of 9 and his hearing at 18, Fukushima has learned more than most people about adversity. He now holds a position of associate professor at the University of Tokyo, where he carries out research on creating barrier-free environments for the disabled. Fukushima gets the children to consider what it feels like to be in a world without sound or light. With emphasis on the importance of communication, Fukushima’s message about the preciousness of life is an object lesson on how we can and must discover our own" light in the darkness."
